Sister Duo Striving to bring Alice to her Wonderland with their IG Thrift Store the Rabbit Hole

Watched Girl Boss on Netflix? If yes, then you will know very well what is a thrift store. If not, then here is what it is -

What is a Thrift Store?
Thrift stores sell clothes or other items that are pre-used and are donated. We all have clothes that we bought but maybe never wore, or even used ones which fits us no more or, we don't wear the style any longer, the clothes are still good to use. Thrift stores are all about sustainability and re-purposing pre-loved goods.

The trend is picking up in India too. And we have several ventures coming out that sells pre-loved items, while mostly clothes.

Jyoshima Kandir (23) and Anima Kandir (21) are two sisters and enterprising ladies, who are working together to curate and build their Instagram-based thrift store, the Rabbit Hole. Anima is a final year fashion student who does most of the styling, photography and sourcing of the items. Jyoshima does the modelling part, accounting, packaging and laundering the pieces. We had Jyoshima, sharing with more about their venture and what it takes to build small biz like this today.

"The idea of thrift store started when people started asking my sister where did she get a particular piece from, or how they would love to raid our wardrobe. Then quarantine happened, and her clothes were not fitting her anymore. And like every other person who wants to make money on their own, then asking it from our already burdened parents, hello there!

"'Rabbit hole' is inspired (obviously) from the "Alice in Wonderland", Alice who believed in dreams. So basically, our Rabbit Hole is for a broke Alice who believes in herself and her dreams. We believe that the items from our page would help them to bring out the magic in them just like the 'Rabbit Hole' did. And personally we think that everyone loves to dress up but not all of them can afford it. So, why not thrift it.

"We do come across people who DM us for collaborations, but we are just getting started and to give it for free is so heartbreaking"

Do you think pop culture and a great amount of global content online is helping to create the buzz for thrift stores in India? - we asked.

"Hell yes. During the quarantine period, the world has become compact. Everything has an online presence now. The growing pop culture and the content online have created demands that can be fulfilled online through thrift stores."

The sisters also redesign the clothes before they put it online for sale. "My sister (Anima) being a final year fashion student is currently working on to launch a fetish collection in later December.

Our clothes are for anyone and everyone. We sell what we love with the hope that it brings out the best in our clients."

"There are good days and bad days but we are learning the do's and don'ts of entrepreneurship everyday"

Talk about the hardships!

"Argghh. Lots of challenges. Where do I even start? It is not a full-time job. We have our internships plus daily chores which cannot be compromised. We do come across people who DM us for collaborations, but we are just getting started and to give it for free is so heartbreaking. We also have people asking for unnecessary discounts. And the last-minute problems are our personal favourite.

"We started this purely because we wanted to be self-sufficient. But it's good to know that people like our collection. Right now we want to be sold out moments after we drop our collection.

"There are good days and bad days, but we are learning the do's and don'ts of entrepreneurship every day. Just like we never dreamt of being interviewed by anyone, but I guess that's what life is about. We never know what we have within ourselves unless we try."
